Snapchat’s hopes float

I can’t introduce the news that Snapchat will go public and start selling shares in the company better than this tweet from Jack Riley does:

Jack was quoting Seth Fiegerman ✍:

Reporting Trump the Reuters’ way

I also can’t recommend this memo from Reuters’ editor-in-chief enough. Especially the ‘Dos’ list, which includes:

Get out into the country and learn more about how people live, what they think, what helps and hurts them, and how the government and its actions appear to them, not to us.

#WeRemember

Moving, harrowing and prescient storytelling from @russelneiss and @chschwartz on Twitter to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day. The account @Stl_Manifest shares personal accounts from passengers on the St Louis, a ship full of refugees fleeing the Holocaust and Nazi occupation in Europe that was turned away from Cuba and the US in 1939.

Hard nuts to crack

Read about how Brazilian journalists are turning an economic downturn into an entrepreneurial opportunity. Media in Brazil has been dominated by Globo for such a long time, it’ll be interesting to see how this changes the landscape.

Since 2012, more than 5,700 layoffs were registered among major media companies in the country’s major cities. According to Volt Data, a data journalism project founded by ICFJ participant Sergio Spagnuolo, 49 percent of them worked for the print media.

The bands played on

Okay, not strictly in the journalism field, but I love the creative act of resistance. Four Tet created a 28-hour playlist of music from the seven Muslim-majority countries targeted by Donald Trump’s travel ban.
